
Today is Software Freedom Day. It’s celebrated every year on third Saturday of September in various countries all over the world. Like other countries, Bangladesh also going to celebrate this day with various programmes. The first initiative was taken to celebrate this day was from a company, known as “Software Freedom International”. In early 2004 a programmer namely Matt Oquest for the first time brings a proposal to adopt an international day for serving free software. At that time “The Open Disk” project was started, through this project usable softwares in Microsoft windows was distributed together for free. Later on the basis of this proposal “Software Freedom Day” was established. From 2004 it’s been celebrating every year.
In Bangladesh, Bangladesh Open Source Network (BDOSN) has been celebrating this day from 2006. This year also there will be a free conversation ceremony at The Head Office of BDOSN. The programme is open for everybody. Along with Dhaka, other 12 BDOSN open source network associates is going to arrange various function. Other organizations like Mozila Bangladesh, Foundation For Open Source Solution (FOSS), SFD Bangladesh Team are also arranging a function on this occasion. FOSS, Presidency University and United International University will arrange an exhibition on using free software.
